On Being An Insecure Writer

This is my first post for a group I joined recently called The Insecure Writer’s Support Group.  Yes, when it comes to my writing I am very, very insecure. I’ve had far too much rejection going on.

The group was started by the amazing Alex J. Cavanaugh. If you haven’t heard of him yet, just click on the group logo in the sidebar and be whisked away to the blog.

Alex has given insecure writers like me a forum to listen to writers, be consoled by writers, and offer encouragement to other writers. Believe me, when you try to make a living at this, you need all the help you can get.

So, this post is just an introduction to the group and a heartfelt thank you to Alex for providing this special forum.

Most of the members write books.  I don’t:  I’m much too AADD for the level of concentration required to author a novel. I write poetry and shorts, which I’m turning into scripts and screenplays for television or the stage.

All you need for this is imagination, of which I have an over abundance from my days as a Kindergarten teacher.

I’m looking forward to meeting my fellow support group members. I’ll drop by their blogs and hope they’ll visit mine.  After all, this writing business can be an awful lonely space.

It’s nice to meet you, Marilyn. I’m late because of a glitch in my computer. Poor thing is old. Just wanted to welcome you to IWSG. I look forward to learning more about you. I’m co-hosting this month. Have a great day.

  2. I’m new to IWSG as well. I also have ADD which is a special kind of writers block. I have to keep multiple projects going on at once or I’m not productive. My editor just got back to me with the last edit of a novel (the fourth I’ve attempted) that I will be self publishing soon.

I detail my projects on my blog. I just received the finished cover of my book and participated in the International Three Day Novel Contest over Labor Day weekend which I’m still recovering from. People with ADD can write novels too. We just juggle a lot of different projects at a time. Ha ha!

  3. Am I the first to comment? Great post for the IWSG. (Alex is a guy.) I’ve been a member since he started it. I’m insecure often. Then, I have some success, great feedback, and the feeling of doing something really worthwhile. I also write scripts! Glad to “meet” you.

  4. Hi Marilyn! I joined the IWSG last month and wrote my first post today. So glad to have found this group of like-minded individuals, too.

I think insecurity is a natural part of the writing personality – but at times it can get to be too much. That’s why IWSG is a brilliant idea in my book! =)
